Season Recap
The 2017 boys’ golf season was a rebuilding season as a young Trojan squad opened the season without a single senior golfer. However, the Trojans gained plenty of experience and showed much improvement throughout the season as they built the foundation for what is expected to be a much improved 2018 season.
The 2017 season started out as a struggle as the inexperienced Trojans finished 15th in the season opening Indian Valley Open and dropped three of their first four dual matches. The Trojans entered the home stretch of the season with a dual match record of 3-7 but they put together their best string of golf to end the regular season with four wins in their final six dual matches to finish the season with a dual match record of 7-9. "We had a pretty good season considering we had a lot of freshman and no seniors," said junior Brandon Goldsmith. "I'd say it was a success, but next year we'll be even better."

After a frustrating day at Salt Fork, junior Jack Sanders got the best of a battle with his scorecard. |
Tusky Valley entered postseason play with a seventh place finish at the IVC Tournament. The Trojans then went to the sectional tournament where the team had a disappointing day and placed 16th to end their team season. "We had our ups and downs and we may not have come through to go to districts as a team, but I thought it was fun," said junior Billy Crone. "To me that's all that matters is having fun with it."
The lone bright spot of the day was the play of junior Brandon Goldsmith as he shot an 80 and advanced to the district tournament as an individual. Goldsmith would compete in the district tournament at Eagle Sticks golf course but was unable to move on to regional play. "My favorite course to play on was Eagle Sticks," noted Goldsmith. "It was a very challenging and beautiful course. It's one of the hardest courses I've ever played with all of the undulations on the greens and the tight fairways."

While the 2017 season was not as successful as the Trojan golfers would have like, there is no doubt that the future is bright as the entire team returns for 2018. “We look forward to next year with all of our golfers returning and hoping for a better season than this year,” said junior Jack Sanders.

What was your team’s biggest strength? What was the biggest weakness?
Jack Sanders - Our biggest strength this season was our friendship within the team. We all were very close to one another and had a lot of fun with everyone. Our biggest weakness was the lack of experience that our team had with no seniors and our team lacked of consistency with our scores.
Hayden Burrier - The team's biggest strength was that we had two guys that could shoot in the thirties. The team's biggest weakness was that we are a young team.
Trevor Kohler - We always had fun on the course. We got down if we were doing bad.
Billy Crone - The biggest strength was drives our biggest weakness was the short game.
Brandon Goldsmith - Our biggest strength was the friendship we had throughout the season. Our biggest weakness was consistency. We could go out and all have really good rounds one day and then the next play the worst we have all year.
What was your most memorable moment from the 2017 season?
Jack Sanders - My best memory is when I made an eagle from 130 yards away from the pin on hole #3 at Wilkshire.
Hayden Burrier - The most memorable moments from the 2017 season was the bus rides to away matches.
Trevor Kohler - I hit a bird in a tree and it died.
Billy Crone - I don't really have a specific moment in mind other than when anyone on the team drained a long birdie putt. Those were always awesome.
Brandon Goldsmith - My most memorable moment was making it to districts as an individual when going in I wasn't really expecting to.
What was the best thing about being a member of this year’s team?
Jack Sanders - The best part about being a member of this year's team was spending time with friends at the course and become better at the sport.
Hayden Burrier - The best thing about being a member of this year's team was getting to know my teammates better.
Trevor Kohler - I got to learn how to golf.
Billy Crone - I got to play golf with new people, aka the freshmen.
Brandon Goldsmith - It was cool to be a more relaxed team where in previous years it seemed like there was more pressure. Overall I'd say it helped our scores.
What is one quality you think a golfer must have to achieve success?
Jack Sanders - Every golfer must have a short-minded mentality to be successful. If you have a poor shot, you have to try and make up for it with the next one and not get down on yourself about it.
Hayden Burrier - A quality that a golfer must have to achieve success is patience and self control.
Trevor Kohler - Don’t get down on yourself.
Billy Crone - Patience
Brandon Goldsmith - I think to be a good golfer you need to be able to have a short memory. If you hit a bad shot you have to be able to forget about it and not dwell on it the rest of the round.
What is your favorite part about golf?
Jack Sanders - My favorite part of golfing is being able watch yourself improve throughout the year.
Hayden Burrier - My favorite part of golf was getting to know my teammates better.
Trevor Kohler - Doing well.
Billy Crone - Having fun and golfing with others.
Brandon Goldsmith - My favorite part of golf is getting out of trouble and making good pars. I would say making birdies, but it can be hard to do that when you're not the best at hitting fairways.
What was your favorite course to play on this season and why?
Jack Sanders - My favorite course that we played on this year was Union Country Club. They kept up with the course very nicely and my friend Brandon and I spent an entire day there for a practice round and we ended up having lunch and watched the golf tournament that was on TV at the time.
Hayden Burrier - My favorite course to play on was Wilkshire because I am most familiar with that course.
Trevor Kohler - Wilkshire because I played it a lot.
Billy Crone - Zoar mainly since I've always played there and it just feels natural to be there.
Brandon Goldsmith - My favorite course to play on was Eagle Sticks. It was a very challenging and beautiful course. It's one of the hardest courses I've ever played with all of the undulations on the greens and the tight fairways.
