Girls' Track Season Recap

The 2018 girls’ track season proved to be one of the most successful in school history as the Trojans were a perfect 10-0 in dual meets and captured three invitational titles, including the school’s first league championship in girls’ track in 15 years. “Our biggest strength is that we have really good depth on our team,” said junior Madisan DeBos.  “All around we have good sprints, good distance runners, and good throwers and jumpers.”

The girls opened the season on March 27th as they hosted a triangular vs. Canton Central Catholic and Fairless.  The Trojans overwhelmed both opponents and easily started the season off with two victories. The meet would set the the stage for the remainder of the dual meet season as the girls comfortably won every meet with the exception of a 73.5-72.5 nailbiter vs. Indian Valley on May 7th.

The girls also showed their stuff at invitationals as they placed second at the JD Milburn Relays and were victorious at the Lidderdale Invitational, the Thrilla in Zoarvilla and the IVC Championships. “This track year was super exciting because my freshman year we didn’t win any big meets and now we’ve won almost all of them, “ said junior Jadyn Kuykendall.

The JD Milburn Relays were highlighted by the distance medley relay team of Caylin Knous, Hannah Hostetler, Kat Gaiser and Madisan DeBos setting a new school record

The girls' track team rallied to win the Thrilla in Zoarvilla on April 27th.

The Thrilla in Zoarvilla was a particularly satisfying win for the Trojans as they trailed a talented Rittman team most of the night.  The event turned in favor of the Trojans during the running of the 800M. Junior Kat Gaiser found herself in third place, trailing two Rittman runners, as they sprinted towards the finish.  Gaiser was able to pass both Rittman runners and take first place to keep the Trojans within striking distance in the team point totals. Tusky Valley entered the night’s final event, the pole vault, trailing by 13 points.  However, junior Madisan DeBos won the event and senior Emma Potts placed fourth to earn 14 points for the Trojans and give the Tusky Valley girls their first ever victory in the Thrilla.

The momentum would continue at the Tuscarawas County meet as the girls brought home 4 county event titles.  Madisan DeBos won the pole vault, 1600M and 3200M and set new Tuscarawas County meet record (5:09.32) in the 1600M.  The Trojans picked up a fourth title when the 400M relay team of Ashley Kinsey, Jadyn Kuykendall, Kennedy Willis and Caylin Knous also won the county title.

The girls would make more history on May 11th when they traveled to Newcomerstown for the IVC championships.  The girls won Tusky Valley first league title in girls’ track in 15 years as they easily outdistanced second place Indian Valley.  Madi DeBos was named the IVC Runner of the Year and Coach DeBos was named the IVC Coach of the Year.

The 4x800M team of Kat Gaiser, Hannah Hostetler, Kaylyn Lloyd and Madi DeBos brought home a district title.

The Trojans continued their success at the district meet as DeBos claimed three individual district titles (pole vault, 1600M, & 3200M) and the girls 4x800M relay team of Kat Gaiser, Kaylyn Lloyd, Hannah Hostetler and Debos also won the district title.  As a team the Trojans would place second and send girls on to the regional competition in 11 of the 17 events. The list of girls qualifying for regionals included:

Girls’ pole vault - Madi Debos and Emma Potts
Girls’ 4x800M relay - Kat Gaiser, Hannah Hostetler, Kaylyn Lloyd, Madi Debos
Girls’ 4x200M relay - Ashley Kinsey, Jadyn Kuykendall, Macey Hicks, Caylin Knous
Girls’ 1600M - Madi Debos
Girls’ 4x100M relay - Ashley Kinsey, Jadyn Kuykendall, Kennedy Willis, Caylin Knous
Girls’ 400M - Lexie Engstrom
Girls’ 300M hurdles - Ashley Kinsey
Girls’ 800M - Kat Gaiser
Girls’ 200M - Caylin Knous
Girls’ 3200M Madi Debos and Kaylyn Lloyd
Girls’ 4x400M relay - Kat Gaiser, Hannah Hostetler, Kennedy Willis, Lexie Engstrom

The girls would continue their amazing season at the regional meet as they would break records on their way to placing third as a team at the regional meet. The girls would be led by Madisan DeBos as she qualified for state in four different event. Individually, DeBos would qualify in the 1600M, pole vault and 3200M. Debos' qualifying time in the 3200M set a new school record time of 11:09.09. DeBos would also qualify as part of the 4x800M relay team with Kat Gaiser, Hannah Hostetler, and Kaylyn Lloyd. Not only did the 4x800 team qualify for state, but they also did so by breaking a school record that had stood for 31 years with a time of 9:31.01. The girls weren't done breaking records as Kat Gaiser would also qualify as an individual in the 800M as she broke Jordyn Koch's school record with a time of 2:17.12.

How would you summarize the 2018 season?

Jadyn Kuykendall - This track year was super exciting because my freshman year we didn’t win any big meets and now we’ve won almost all of them but maybe one.

Hailey Maloon - The 2018 season was amazing, I have gotten to grow closer to friends and make new friends. Our season from the girls standpoint was very successful and I can't wait to see what next season has in store for us!

Kat Gaiser - The 2018 season has been absolutely successful. Not only have the girls won multiple tri-meets, but we have also won the Thrilla for the first time in school history for girls, the Lidderdale Invitational, the IVC meet, and were runner-up at Districts. I think we are all eager to see what comes next for the success of our team!

Ashley Kinsey - Fun, fast!

Madi DeBos - The 2018 season was great. Everyone worked really hard and it has really payed off.

The girls won the IVC championship. What was the team’s biggest strength?

Jadyn Kuykendall - There wasn’t a single event we didn’t have people score in. we’re all around a super strong team.

Hailey Maloon - Our teams biggest strength in my mind would be the fact that our team is so diverse. We're one big family though, the distance girls and the sprinters and the jumpers all get along really well.

Kat Gaiser - This year, the biggest strength the team has had is unity. We have really come together this year to pick each other up more than we have in the past. No matter if it is sprints, distance, field events, or throws, the girls are all so supportive of one another. I feel as if we have all found our niche and we can all support each other 100% in what we do on the track.

Ashley Kinsey - Support, hard work.

Madi DeBos - Our biggest strength is that we have really good depth on our team. All around we have good sprints, good distance runners, and good throwers and jumpers.

What was your most memorable moment from the 2018 season (on or off the track)?

Jadyn Kuykendall - Winning the Thrilla.

Hailey Maloon - My most memorable moment from the 2018 track season would be winning the Thrilla & the IVC meets. Or tripping right after I crossed the finish line after the 100m hurdles... great times.

Kat Gaiser - My most memorable moment from this season was probably at the Thrilla in Zoarvilla (or Zoarilla...whichever you prefer). I was running the open 800 and was in third coming down the home stretch, but somehow managed to pull out the first place win at the end, just barely beating the girls in front of me by a second. In addition, after running the district meet this past weekend, another favorite memory was qualifying for regionals next week in the open 800 and obtaining a new PR of 2:21.

Ashley Kinsey - 3 stepping after my hard work I put in.

Madi DeBos - My most memorable moment of 2018 is the 4x800M team winning districts. Everyone has worked really hard and it's been really crazy trying to figure out who is on the team and we finally got it down and we went out and came together as a team.

What was the best thing about being a member of this year’s team?

Jadyn Kuykendall - Being back on the team and having an amazing season.

Hailey Maloon - The best thing about being a part of this team would be how welcoming the upperclassmen were of the freshman. We all made so many memories together and I can't wait for next year.

Kat Gaiser - The success we had as a girls team this year was one of the best parts. We all put in our best effort all the time and it has paid off. In addition, it was really nice this season to be able to bond with the underclassmen. They are such a bright and kind group of girls and they made the season a lot more enjoyable.

Ashley Kinsey - Accomplishments and winning invitationals with my team.

Madi DeBos - The best thing about being a member of the team is getting close to all the girls. This year has been the best year for all of us coming together and working together as one.

What is your favorite track meet of the season and why?

Jadyn Kuykendall - Probably the Thrilla because it’s our own meet and goes until pretty late.

Hailey Maloon - My favorite track meet this season would be the Thrilla. It's a really fun meet and after I was done competing, Sami Leffler and I went around and interviewed people for no reason. Also, the team went to Steak 'n Shake after the meet.

Kat Gaiser - My favorite meet is either the Thrilla in Zoarvilla because it is our one large, home meet or the district and regional meet because there is a lot of competition at those meets.

Ashley Kinsey - The Thrilla. It has a lot of competition and it is long.

Madi DeBos - My favorite track meet is the West Holmes invitational. There is always really good competition and a bunch of teams.

What is your favorite event to participate in and why?

Jadyn Kuykendall - The 4x100M because it’s such a fast race and we’re good at it.

Hailey Maloon - My favorite event to participate in would be the high jump, it's a super fun event that I have always loved. I have also tried a few new field events this year. Overall... field events are the best events!

Kat Gaiser - My favorite event is a close tie between the 4x800 meter relay or the open 800. Of course, the 4x800M is my favorite relay because the four of us are all so determined to succeed and have high expectations for our performance. But, my favorite open race is the 800 because the outcome of the race solely depends on me. There aren't 3 other girls that can affect the outcome of the race, it is just me. I also enjoy the challenge of being able to go out there and see what I can accomplish by myself.

Ashley Kinsey - The 4x100M. It is fast and fun.

Madi DeBos - My favorite event to compete in is the mile. I love the mile because it is a event you have to be mentally tough in.

Boys' Track Season Recap

The 2018 boys’ track team was highlighted by a talented group of sprinters and jumpers that propelled the Trojans to a 5-4-1 record in dual meets and a 4th place finish in the IVC. “The best thing about being a member of this year's team was the comradery,” said senior Justin Merrick.  “Our team bonded together well and in turn we worked together to compete at a competitive level.” Merrick’s thoughts were echoed by junior Arvie Wolfe. “The best part about being on the team was all the friends and all the support we had for each other,” state Wolfe.

While the Trojans had great team chemistry they lacked the numbers to have depth in every event. Because of this the Trojans were up and down in dual meets as they defeated Canton Central Catholic, Fairless, Strasburg, Malvern and Sandy Valley but dropped meets to Claymont, East Canton (twice), and Indian Valley.  The boys also had a track rarity when they tied Garaway 73-73 on May 2nd.

Justin Merrick was name the Male Athlete of the Meet at the Thrilla in Zoarvilla.

The boys also had strong showing throughout the season in the invitationals.  While they did not win any invites, they placed in the top 4 at the JD Milburn Relays, Lidderdale Invitational, Thrilla in Zoarvilla, and IVC Championships.

The boys’ third place finish at the Thrilla in Zoarvilla was highlighted by the performance of senior Justin Merrick.  Merrick picked up individual victories in the 200M and 400M and was on the winning 400M relay team with Brock Haas, Owen Clugston, & Brandon Steinbaugh as well as the winning 1600M relay team with Haas, Steinbaugh, and Tyler Stump.

Following a 4th place team finish at the IVC Championships, the boys competed in the district meet at West Holmes.  The Trojans would place fifth in the 14 team field but would send boys to the regionals in six of the 17 events. The list of boys' track team members that qualified for the regional meet included:

Boys’ high jump - Tyler Stump
Boys’ pole vault - Arvie Wolf
Boys’ 4x200M relay - Brock Haas, Owen Clugston, Brandon Steinbaugh, Justin Merrick
Boys’ 400M - Justin Merrick
Boys’ 200M - Justin Merrick
Boys’ 4x400M relay - Brock Haas, Tyler Stump, Brandon Steinbaugh, Justin Merrick

The boys team then traveled to the regional meet at Muskingum University where the 4x400M relay team of Brock Haas, Tyler Stump, Brandon Steinbaugh, and Justin Merrick qualified for the state meet. Justin Merrick would aslo qualify for the state meet as an individual as he qualified in the 400M.

How would you summarize the 2018 season?

Tyler Stump - Very fun.

Tucker Pruett - Overall it was a good year.

Justin Merrick - I would summarize the 2018 season as successful, for the team and individually.

Brock Haas - Crazy.

Arvie Wolfe - This year was a filled with team support and many memorable moments.

What was your most memorable moment from the 2018 season (on or off the track)?

Tyler Stump - Getting really close to 6 foot in high jump this year.

Tucker Pruett - Having fun on and off the track with everyone.

Justin Merrick - My most memorable moment from the 2018 season would have to be receiving the male athlete of the meet award for the Thrilla in Zoarvilla.

Brock Haas - Winning the 4x400 at the Thrilla.

Arvie Wolfe - The most memorable moment from the track season was when Owen got the nickname of Kevin Jr.

What was the best thing about being a member of this year’s team?

Tyler Stump - Having a great team to be around.

Tucker Pruett - Having fun with everyone.

Justin Merrick - The best thing about being a member of this year's team was the comradery. Our team bonded together well and in turn, we worked together to compete at a competitive level.

Brock Haas - Being able to help Owen playfully harass Justin every practice. LOL.

Arvie Wolfe - The best part about being on the team was all the friends and all the support we had for each other.

What was your favorite track meet of the season and why?

Tyler Stump - My favorite track meet so far has been the IVC because I had got new and personal best in a few of my events.

Tucker Pruett - IVC meet even though I started the 110 hurdles slow I finished 3rd.

Justin Merrick - The Thrilla in Zoarvilla is my favorite track meet of the season because it's our one home invitational meet that we have. Also, our team has always had a strong showing at the meet.

Brock Haas - The Thrilla because a lot of people we knew were there.

Arvie Wolfe - My favorite track meet of the season was the indoor state track meet because I did extremely good at a highly competitive track meet.

What was your favorite event to participate in and why?

Tyler Stump - High jump because it is fun and there is basically no running involved.

Tucker Pruett - 110 hurdles because they are fun and short.

Justin Merrick - My favorite event to participate in is the 400 meter dash because it's a sprint that one must strategize well in order to do their best. A lot of different things can happen during the race, in contrast to a 100 or 200 meter dash in which someone sprints 100 percent the whole time.

Brock Haas - 4x400M because we were the strongest in that relay.

Arvie Wolfe - My favorite event to participate in was pole vault because it is the most thrilling track and field event.
