Season Recap

The 2017-2018 wrestling season was a season of improvement as a young Trojan team got off to a slow start but steadily improved and claimed the sectional championship.  “At the beginning it was rough but with the help of our coaches throughout the year we were ready for the second season." stated senior Seth Johnson. “They (the coaches)  mentally and physically prepared us for the challenges we were going to face in the tournaments.”

The wrestlers entered the season knowing that they could face some challenges during the regular season as the wrestling team consisted of just 11 members.  The lack of bodies meant the team could not fill all of the weight classes which meant the team would have to forfeit that match and give valuable points to the opposing team.  As a result, the Trojans often struggled in dual matches throughout the season and finished with a dual record of 4-15.

The Trojans also wrestled in a few invitationals during the season but the lack of depth also hurt the team at the invites.  The Trojans finished a respectable 7th out of 24 teams at the Waterloo Invitational but struggled at Garaway’s Peg Leg Scuffle as they placed 9th out of 10 teams.

Jackson Dunn finished the year with a record of 39-5 and advanced to the state wrestling championships.

On February 24th the Trojans competed in the IVC Championships.  The Trojans struggled as they did not win any individual titles and the team placed 6th out of 7 teams, defeating only Malvern.

Just seven days later the Trojans competed in the sectional tournament.  Several of the same teams who had competed in the IVC Championships were also present but this time things would be much different as Tusky Valley produced their best performance of the season and won the Sectional championship by defeating 15 other schools.

Individually, Jackson Dunn claimed the sectional title while Corey Keim, Tucker Pruett, Noah Love, Luke Herron, Seth Johnson, Todd Zbuka, and Eli Cox all advanced to the district tournament.

Dunn would continue his hot streak as he went undefeated at the District tournament and captured the district championship to advance to the state meet.  In his first match at state Dunn pinned his opponent in the third period to advance to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, he could not keep the momentum going and dropped his next two matches to finish the season at 39-5.

How would you summarize the 2017-2018 season?

Noah Love - I improved a lot since my freshman year.

Seth Johnson - At the beginning it was rough but with the help of our coaches throughout the year we were ready for the "second season" as Coach Wallick and Coach Johnson would say. They mentally and physically prepared us for the challenges we were going to face in the tournaments.

Todd Zbuka - Good.

What was your most memorable moment from the 2017 season (on or off the court)?

Noah Love - Hanging out with members of the wrestling team and having fun.

Seth Johnson - When I beat the 220 pound kid from Heath that beat me every time I wrestled him. I beat him when it counted at districts and I ran to my dad (Coach Johnson) and gave him a huge hug and you cant forget about Wallick i hugged him too.

Todd Zbuka - Just being able to spend my senior season with my team.

What was the best thing about being a member of this year’s team?

Noah Love - We won sectionals.

Seth Johnson - The brotherhood that was made by both the coaches and the wrestlers. I've never had a bond like that with any other team.

Todd Zbuka - Being a role model.

If you could only use one word to describe the season, what would it be and why?

Noah Love - Fun because as the year went on I became closer with all the wrestlers and we hung out together at each others houses.

Seth Johnson - Development. I say that because of what our amazing coaches did for us. What they did was truly amazing and I cant wait to see what the program is going to be like next year and all the years to come.

Todd Zbuka - Fullfilling because I wrestled to my best abilities.

What is the biggest quality you need to be successful as a wrestler?

Noah Love - Dedication because it doesn't matter how long you do something it matters what you put in to that time.

Seth Johnson - Don't ever expect anything to be given to you, you need to work for everything.

Todd Zbuka - Drive and initiative

.

What advice would you give to young wrestlers so they can be successful?

Noah Love - Work hard and fight through the pain because if you do that you'll become an all around better wrestler. Also, always pump your team up before you guys are about to wrestle and HAVE FUN doing it.

Seth Johnson - Don't ever doubt yourself because once you do that you are bound to lose.

Todd Zbuka - The off season work is what makes the difference.
