TVLS Response to 2017 State Report Card

On the surface, it may appear that our Tuscarawas Valley Local School District has failed.  After all, a grade of “F” generally represents failure according to a set standard.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Let’s take a closer look:

  • Out of 608 Ohio school districts, 490 received an “F” for achievement.  Only 23 districts across the state earned an “A.”  As an educator, if 490 of my 608 students failed the test, I’ve done a terrible disservice and must make immediate correction.  Clearly, an “F” is NOT an accurate portrayal of our students’ academic performance. Click here to view a local achievement comparison.

  • For 2017, the state set the passage rate for all grades, all tests at 80% (2016 passage rates ranged from 62-75%).  This year, TV Schools met 9 out of 24 achievement indicators, resulting in an “F.”  Note:  Had the state kept the same standard benchmarks as last year, the district would have met 18 of the 24 indicators, which would have resulted in a “C.”

  • Pay close attention to the Performance Index, a weighted calculation for the performance of each student.  81% of our students scored in the proficient or higher ranges.  55% of TV students scored in the accelerated, advanced, and advanced plus ranges, an outstanding illustration showing the ability of our students to think and achieve at the highest levels.  In fact, our Performance Index score ranks 92nd out of 608 districts in Ohio.  Note: Only 124 of 608 districts earned an “A” or “B” for Performance Index.  Our “B” is an accurate reflection of our students’ performance. Click here to view a local Performance Index comparison.

  • Look at Overall Value Added.  We monitor this very closely because it represents the actual growth in student learning for all TV students, in comparison to all Ohio students, over a two-year time frame.  This grade of “A” is well-deserved, especially when a grade of “C” represents a year’s growth for the typical student.  Our teachers work diligently to ensure our students meet or exceed a year’s academic growth from one year to the next. Click here to view a local Value Added comparison.

Three final points:

1. I am extremely proud of our students, teachers and staff, leadership team, and Board.
2. We will continue to grow and improve on all fronts (including the state accountability system).
3. We are 100% committed to making TVLS the most appealing school district around by being:

A. Personal in our Approach (by knowing our students and creating a safe, positive, and caring learning environment)
B. Purposeful in our Work (by developing a rich culture of thinking and learning for our students, expecting them to work and think hard, and challenging them beyond what they believe is possible)
C. Unified in our Message (by modeling and expecting excellent character traits such as responsibility, honesty, integrity, hard work, reliability, perseverance, manners, kindness, and face-to-face communication)

When we do these things well, everything else will fall in place.  GO TROJANS!

Beginning of Year Kindergarten Schedule

The first week of school for Kindergarten students is different from other grades in the district.  According to the Ohio Department of Education, all kindergarten students must take the “Kindergarten Readiness Assessment” (KRA).  This test will be given Wednesday, August 23rd through Friday, August 25th.  Each student will be given a 40 minute time slot to attend a one-on-one assessment with a teacher.  Once the assessments are completed, classes will begin for students.

In order to make it an easier transition, children will be given transition days to attend when only half the class will be present.  Kindergarten transition days will be held Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, August 29th.   This gives your child time with his/her teacher to learn the daily routine without so many children attending.  Teachers usually request that parents bring their kindergarten child(ren) to school that first introduction day for half of the class so that they can go over classroom expectations with both the parents and the children. Specific dates and times for KRA and the transition day, along with the child’s teacher’s name will be mailed home by August 12th.  If there are any questions during the summer, please email Mrs. Andrea Clements, TV Primary Principal, at [email protected].
