1956-1957 Season (17-6)
Season Recap

The 1956-1957 Trojan basketball team had the honor of being the first sports team to represent the newly formed Tuscarawas Valley High School in interscholastic competition.

The school district had been formed as a consolidation of Mineral City, Bolivar, Zoar, New Cumberland, & the Fairfield school district. None of these schools had ever played football and when the school opened in the fall of 1956 the Trojan football team only practiced but did not play any games. That meant that the basketball team would be the first to carry the Trojan nickname and the red, white, and black colors into competition.

Bolivar and Mineral City had each fielded teams as independent high schools in 1956. Ken Haueter, Wayne Ruof, Dave Wolf, John Geers, and Roy Buchanan were all returning lettermen from Bolivar while super sophomore Ben Price was Mineral City's lone returning lettermen. The team would be coached by former Dover and Ohio State Basketball star Raymond "Sucker" Low. Low had coached the Bolivar Cardinals during the 1956 season.

The basketball team did not disappoint their fans as they defeated Sugarcreek 45-40 behind 18 points from Ben Price in Tusky Valley's first-ever basketball game. Following a loss to Strasburg, the Trojans then went on a five game winning streak with impressive victories over Port Washington,Stone Creek, Tuscarawas, Malvern, and Augusta.

The Trojans entered their December 21st showdown with Midvale with a 6-1 record. The Blue Devils were the defending county champions and had long been considered the elite program in the county. The game turned out to be a thriller with a controversial ending. The Trojans jumped out to a 23-10 lead after the opening quarter. Midvale began chipping away and cut to the lead to 2 points entering the final stanza. The lead changed hands several times in the fourth quarter and the game came down to the final possession. Everyone in the crowd believed that Midvale was clinging to a 73-72 lead as the Trojans attacked on their final possession. It was then that Trojan reserve Marvel Burton hit his only bucket of the game with six seconds remaining to give the Trojans a 74-73 victory. The game officials signed the scorebook making the game official and Tusky Valley had taken the thrilling victory. Shortly after the game ended it was discovered that the scorebooks for both Tusky Valley and Midvale actually totaled 73 points for Tusky Valley. Burton's late bucket should have tied the game at 73-73 & nobody could account for the extra point that had been credited to the Trojans. Unfortunately the game officials had already left the gym and since they had signed off on the incorrect score the official result stood as a 74-73 victory for the Trojans.

The Trojans knocked off Sugarcreek and Conotton Valley to improve their record to 9-1 and set up a rematch with Strasburg. The Trojans jumped on the Tigers early and led 16-7 after one quarter of play. Strasburg then changed their strategy and employed a pressing defense and Tusky Valley had no answer. The Tigers dominated play and turned their 9-point deficit into a 52-34 victory. The loss dropped the Trojans to 9-2 on the season.

Following the loss the Trojans hosted Dundee on January 15th and quickly took out their frustrations on the Bulldogs. Tusky Valley raced to a 28-7 lead after one quarter of play. The Trojans continued the onslaught throughout as Ben Price racked up 27 points and Ken "Bobo" Haueter added 18. When the dust settled the Tusky Valley walked away with a 105-40 victory. The 65 point margin of victory still stands as a school record

The Trojans went 2-2 in their next four games and their record stood at 12-4 when they entered their rematch against a struggling Dundee team on February 1st. The Trojans again jumped on Dundee immediately as Ben Price scored 18 first quarter points and the Trojans took a 35-11 lead after the opening period. The Trojan offensive onslaught continued despite Price sitting out both the second and fourth quarters. By the end of the game all 12 Trojans cagers had scored and Tusky Valley had a 107-48 victory. The 107 points scored still stands as a school record.

The Trojans then rolled past Malvern and Baltic to end the regular season with a 15-4 record and Tusky Valley entered their first ever Tuscarawas County Class A Tournament as one of the favorites.

Tusky Valley began tournament play by dismantling Port Washington 88-63. Davey Jo Wolf led the Trojans with 24 points while Ben Price (20) and Ken Haueter (16) also reached double figures for Tusky Valley.

The Port Washington victory set up a rematch with Gnadenhutten who had defeated the Trojans decisively in the regular season. The Trojans took an early lead but foul trouble began to hurt the Trojans in the second period. Trojan star Ben Price was forced to sit with fouls and the Indians took advantage. Price returned for the fourth quarter and the Trojans captured the lead behind the play of Price, Haueter and Wolf but in the end the Trojans could not hold on and dropped a 79-74 decision.

The victory moved Gnadenhutten into sectional play while the loss moved the Trojans into the consolation bracket of the tournament. The Trojans once again faced Port Washington. The Trojans trailed by as many as 11 points early in the game against Port but once again the offensive firepower of the Trojans proved to be too much as Ken Haueter poured in 24 points while Ben Price (21) and Wayne Ruof (16) had big games to lead Tusky Valley to a 73-66 victory.

The Trojans then faced Midvale in the consolation finals with a berth in the state sectional tournament on the line. The Trojans entered the game 17-5 and favored over the 13-9 Blue Devils. Unfortunately the Trojans ran into a Blue Devil team that was about to begin a magical stretch. The game was never close as the Blue Devils jumped on the Trojans early and built up 15 point lead at halftime. The Trojans were forced to continue playing Ben Price despite foul trouble an that strategy backfired when Price fouled out of the game early in the third quarter. The Blue Devils continued to pull away and Midvale cruised to a 96-58 victory.

At the time the Midvale loss seemed like a stunning upset but Midvale soon proved it was no fluke as the "boys from Stumphill" knocked off Killbuck, Stone Creek and Walnut Creek to win the sectional. The Blue Devils then defeated Adena and Gnadenhutten to capture the district title. Midvale's magical journey continued as they defeated Vienna and Savannah in regional play to advance to the State Final Four. Midvale's run would come to an end in the state semifinals as they fell to Ayersville.

The Trojans ended their initial season of basketball with an impressive 17-6 record. Ken Haueter and Ben Price were named to the All-County team. The end of the season also brought an end to the coaching career of Raymond "Sucker" Low as he resigned his coaching position at the April 1957 Board of Education meeting. Low would continue his teaching career at Tusky Valley until his retirement in 1972.
