Hoopsters Retain Senate

The dreams of a championship team were shattered in the first round of the Districts with a "miracle shot" by the River Pilots. Although the loss was sudden and unexpected, the Trojan basketball team had nothing to be ashamed of. They were Sectional Champions for the third time in the last four years, and were Co-Senate League Champions for the second year in a row.

"This year's season was very similar compared to last; however, the expectations of our community were very different. The accomplishments which were made this year were expected. Our players played with a great deal of pressure on them ," Coach Bob Von Kaenel remarked.

This year the team had six seniors. They displayed outstanding teamwork and leadership. Senior Aaron Rossetti commented, "We had a fine season. We worked extremely hard every night. It hurt really bad when the season ended with one lucky shot. Our team had our minds set on returning to State. We knew what we had to do and we believed in ourselves."

"The strengths on our team had to be our defense and ball handling. Overall team height was a major weakness," Von Kaenel said.

The sudden loss left the Trojans hurting and wondering for a long time. Although this year's dreams ended early in the tournaments, the new league next year should be very exciting.

Post-season award winners were Steve Franks(jr.), Best Offensive Player, Most Assists; Craig Taylor (sr.), Best Defensive Player; Rusty Roof (sr.), Most Improved ; Darrin Vaughan (sr.), Most Rebounds; Bryan Shephard (sr.), Best Hustler; Aaron Rossetti (sr.), Coaches' Award; David Oiler (sr.), Coaches' Award.

Miracle Shot Ends Dream

When a team has a championship season, it faces many more challenges in the following season. Thus it was with T.V. in '89.

"It is a great feeling to be on top. Every time you take the court, you have to realize that everyone is gunning to beat you and will be playing their best. That naturally creates added pressure," commented Coach Von Kaenel. "We prepared for each team the same as we always have. We covered the team's offensive and defensive sets, then sharpened the skills in our own game plan," he added.

"We had a good season by winning the Senate League. the only disappointing thing about it was that we didn't go as far as we wanted to in tournaments. The fans were really great. We wouldn't have been nearly as successful without them," stated senior Rusty Roof.

"This year's team was very hard-working and extremely proud. they were paced with a great deal of pressure and responded by winning the league championship. Only a miracle shot could could eliminate them from post-season play. No one should lose that way," Von Kaenel concluded.

Along with many special recognition awards the players received, Coach Von Kaenel was selected as North All-Stars' coach in the OHSSA North-South Cage Classic.
