Displaying teamwork and pride, the team avenged regular season heartbreaking defeats in the post-season, thus rewarding the eight senior leaders.
With only two returning lettermen on the squad, one might have suspected that the team of '91 would have been filled with inexperience, youth, and inability. On the contrary, the team fielded eight seniors that led to a winning season and a very exciting, fun-filled post-season tournament.
The Trojans finished with a very respectable 14-10 ledger, 11-9 in the regular season.
"It was a very frustrating regular season for the team and our fans. The majority of our lesses came in the closing minutes of the games. In the past, we usually won those contests. That was disappointing, but the team overcame the adversities and pressures by upsetting a couple of state-ranked teams in the end," commented Varsity Coach Bob Von Kaenel.
"All of the teams we played knew TV had a tradition of playing 'hard-nosed' basketball every game. Nobody was ever passive when they played the Trojans. We were a 24-0 team in the first half. If we had been a little more competitive in the second halves, we would have won a lot more games," senior Matt Bouscher remarked.
The 1990-91 basketball season was the last for eight very dedicated senior leaders.
Post-season awards went to Matt Bouscher (sr.), Most Rebounds; Ryan Kramer (sr.), Best Offensive Player; Bill Emley (sr.), Best Defensive Player; Mike Lieser (sr.), Best Offensive Player; Mike Dilley (sr.), Most Improved; Lorin Beaber (sr.) Coach's Award; Scott Selinsky (sr.), Most Assists; Johnny Frazee (sr.), Coach's Award.
Highlighted by an upset win over West Muskingum, the 1991 tournament trail turned an average season into an exciting finale.
"Even though we had a disappointing regular season, we knew we were a lot better than our record indicated. We came together at the right time for the tournaments, which has been a tradition for T.V. teams the past few years. Our wins over No. 1 ranked West Muskingum and Wellsville, and our heartbreaking loss to Shenandoah showed that we were in fact a great team," remarked senior co-captain Ryan Kramer.
At the tournament drawing, T.V. received the honor of playing Ridgewood in the first game and then No. 1 West Muskingum, who defeated Indian Valley in the Sectional semi-finals.
"The tournament trail was very exciting. We were able to get past Ridgewood, and then we had to face a gigantic hurdle," commented Coach Von Kaenel. "Upsetting West Muskingum will go down as one of the greatest wins in history of Tusky Valley basketball. Everyone played so well and became so focused on the task at hand. The confidence displayed by our players was overwhelming. There was no way they were going to lose," he said.
"Beating Wellsville put us into the District finals. Only one other T.V. team has ever gone further than our '91 Trojans," Von Kaenel added. In District final play, the team ran out of time against the Shenandoah Zeps for the second year in a row, falling to defeat 59-57.
"I personally congratulate the Trojans on a fantastic year," Von Kaenel concluded.
