Cagers Endur Ups and Downs
Cagers endured a grueling season of ups and downs, finishing with a disappointing 5-16 overall record and an eighth place finish in the PAC. Against all odds, however, the men responded to challenges encountered throughout the season. "We all played hard and even if we lost, we improved each game," stated senior Zach Salapack.
Versus PAC champion Manchester, the Trojans battled until Rob Miller's desperation shot sent the game into a costly overtime defeating the Trojans 59-56.
At Indian Valley, the Trojans pulled off a huge win behind junior Ben Everhart's 22 points. "Beating Indian Valley was the highlight of my season," commented senior Mark Skelton.
During the absence of six seniors, many underclassmen showed their talents by pushing rival Manchester to the limit. However, their efforts weren't quite enough as the Trojans fell 79-60.
At Dover, the hoopsters had a hot start but fizzled as Newcomerstown had a come-from-behind victory 72-59.
"I would have liked to have gone .500, but we didn't; however, we persevered through hard times and most importantly, we had fun," responded senior Seth Duerr.
Post-season awards went to Ben Wright (sr.), MVP and Best Offensive; Seth Duerr (sr.), Best Defensive; B.J. Lamb (sr.), Most Improved; Wendell Merrill (sr.), Coach's Award.
The Ball Didn't Bounce Our Way
"The ball didn't bounce our way at all," commented Wendell Merrill. The season was thought to be disappointing by some players and by some area sports fans.
"The season had its high points and low points. Even though it was a little disappointing I think we played hard and we did improve throughout the season," said John Gowan.
The season was definitely like a roller coaster with a lot of downhill turns. The cagers came up short during the season in meeting the goals set at preseason. "I thought we were close to where we wanted to be all year but we never actually got there," commented Adam Bee.
The score sheets will simply list the wins and losses but they will not tell you that the team was challenged in three overtimes including one against the number one team in the conference, Manchester. Another amazing fact reveals that seven of the losses were within only four points.
