Cagers Have Impressive Turnaround
The Trojan cagers enjoyed a fairly successful campaign this season. Their final record was 9-13. They had a 3-7 record in the PAC which earned them a fifth place finish. The cagers were paced by seven seniors and a strong core of underclassmen. They had many key victories this year.
The season began with a huge upset win over Northwest. This was a sweet victory considering the Trojans were coming off a disappointing 0-21 season last year.
The Trojans also picked up some key PAC wins. They swept East Canton this season. Arguably the biggest victory of the year was over Sandy Valley at home. The Trojans came out ready to play on Senior Night and prevented their rival from gaining first place in the league.
The cagers handled many area non-league foes this season. They had big wins over Strasburg, Indian Valley, Conotton Valley, and Central Catholic.
The cagers drew rival Sandy Valley in the first round of the playoffs. They came out ready to play and overcame an eleven point lead to end Sandy's season. "Beating Sandy twice was a big achievement," commented senior Phil Eckinger.
The Trojans encountered some success this season and made a nice recovery from last season's disappointment. This season could have been better, but it did provide a strong foundation for a new Trojan basketball dynasty.
Cagers Provide Foundation for a Strong Future
This year's basketball team overcame many challenges despite having many new faces. First year coach Steve Franks had his troops ready from the beginning as they upset Northwest to end their 39 game win streak. The team also managed 8 more wins until succumbing to Garaway in the sectional finals.
The Trojans received a lift from many underclassmen. Junior point guard Rocky Argento fought off other teams' nagging pressure in numerous games. Sophomores Jeremy Eckinger and Mike Rumer also saw a lot of action in the second half of the season. Each provided a great deal of offensive firepower. Juniors Matt Meeker and Nick Stotzer also filled in nicely when called upon. Meeker provided size inside, and Stotzer shot well while applying pressure defense.
The Trojan JV team also had an impressive season. They won the PAC and had an overall record of 13-7. The JV's received a big contribution from three freshmen at the end of the season. The freshmen team also won the PAC in impressive fashion.
The success of the underclassmen show that the foundation has been laid, and the future of Tusky Valley basketball is a bright one.
Post-season awards went to: Josh James (sr.), Best Defense; Rocky Argento (jr.), Best FT Shooter; Zack Fait (sr.), Best Offensive and MVP; and Phil Eckinger (sr.), Coach's Award.
