Trojan football closed fifth in the Senate League and overall at 3-7, with wins over Ridgewood, Central Catholic, and Senate foe Sandy Valley, "the best one of all," according to Coach John Hurst.

About the team's performance, Hurst stated, "We performed poorly on defense which was unexpected considering the number of returning defensive lettermen. When we switched to a 5-2-4 defense, we played the last three games better. With Brent Belknap at quarterback, the offense performed much better than excepted. Our passing and running game improved. Gary Adams led the way in receptions with 16 averaging 15.1 yards per catch. Mike Moore paced the Trojans with 547 total yards averaging 5.2 yards per carry."

Questioned as to what would make the Trojans a better playing team, Hurst commented, "In order for the football team or any other team in this school to play more together, those individuals who make up that team must become bigger, stronger, and faster. I feel when you accomplish these things, you win ball games, and games nothing brings a team together better than wins."

Two-a-days Are Two Too Much

Two-a-days, have to be the most grueling practices an athlete must face in order to do well in football. Two-a-days consist of an early 2 and a half hour practice from 8-10:30 a.m. followed by a half-hour lunch break, while waiting for equipment and clothing to dry from the early morning dew and sweat.

The second session runs from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A player considers himself lucky if he survives the afternoon practice. During this time temperatures may reach 90 degrees. Carrying 5-10 pounds of equipment can push an athlete's body temperature into the 100 degree mark, making it hard for any player to survive heat exhaustion.

During August the most worthy opponent on the field is the sun which puts a player through physical and mental stress because he will be thinking of the heat and not concentrating on practice, causing the coach to yell at him for making mistakes. But all these factors make a team ready for the gridiron.

As Mike Moore said, "The Two-a-days separate the people who want to play and the people who don't. Not everyone will get up at 7 a.m. on their summer vacation."
