To Tackle Future Opponents
First year Head coach Mike Wellin and his youthful girdders finished 0-7 in the league and 0-10 overall.
Youth and inexperience were the key factors in the losses according to Assistant Coach John Hite.
"Our athletes showed a lot of class throughout the season because they never quit playing together as a team. There were several underclassmen who saw varsity action, and hopefully, this will give the team the needed experience in future seasons," said Coach Hite.
"Practice and experience are great teachers. The underclassmen apologized to me many times for the ten losses, but they had nothing to be sorry for. They played the game the game and even when we were 0-8, they never quit. I enjoyed working with all of them and looked back on the season with good feelings. After all, if you do your best, you've won no matter what the score is," stated senior Willie Handrich.
Post-season awards went to: Willie Handrich (sr.), Scout Team Award; John Warner (sr.), Coaches' Award; Sean Edie (jr.), Most-Improve; Jake Chenevey (jr.), Outstanding Defensive Player; J.P. Ragon (soph.), Outstanding Offensive Player.
Outplay and Outsmart Foes
Considering That football can be a hostile, injury- prone game, that consumes all free time between July and mid November and is played in adverse weather conditions, why did we do it?
"Although injuries are a downside, there is also an upside. Football requires a lot of conditioning that helps us to maintain good health. The game is also exciting and rewarding. Many of my close friends were met through playing football and other sports. Other benefits include motivation to further education by winning football scholarships. The inspiration to meet a personal goal is often found in sports. In my opinion, the assets far out-number the liabilities, though there may be times when my mother would say otherwise," said Zac Price, junior tight end.
"Football has it's own type of high. I know going out and and banging into people may not sound fun, but when we're out on the field, we get faced with the challenge of an opponent across the line. No matter if the team wins or loses, if I beat my man 90% of the time, I won my match, and even if every man on the team does the same, then we have a game won," said Brent Burrier, senior left guard.
Sports Check
Is football included in your future?
John Warner- "No, I am not going to play football, but I will try to get into some intramural leagues and participate in some backyard football games."
Brent Burrier- " I do not know what I'm going to do, but I am hoping to play college football if I can stay healthy."
Chris Locker- "I do not think that I am good enough to play college football, but I intend to help out with the Flag Football program."
Looking back on the season, what would you change?
Dave Lautenschleger- "I do not think I would have changed anything. Even though our season was not very successful, it was something to learn and grow from."
Steve Scheideger- "After awhile we knew we wouldn't have a winning season, so I would have given the freshman and sophmores more playing time and began looking to the future."
Bryan Wright- "It was hard learning a new system because it was so complicated. I would make sure eveyone knew the system before the begining of the season, so we could get used to it."
