Family of Forty

With strong and commanding leadership, the seniors guided gridders to an impressive finish, ending the season at 8-2.

"All the older guys were great. They seemed to take the rest of us under their wings and helped us younger guys out," stated sophomore Justin Peden.

"It wasn't a question of being a senior or a freshmen; they all considered themselves as an important part of the team. This led to a feeling of being more of a family than a team," commented Coach John Hite.

"All of the guys were very close," said junior Seth Duerr. "There were no jealousies within the team. This made it easier for us to work together."

A season highlight included the defeat of the Indian Valley Braves for the first time in PAC-7 history.

"I think it was a great achievement. We might not have won the PAC, but we achieved other goals, such as beating I.V.," remarked sophomore Orlando Cantu .

It was a great feeling beating a team for the first time ever and an even greater feeling beating Indian Valley. Not only was it a game to remember, but it was a memorable and exciting season," said Reid Geibel.

"The victory over Indian Valley was one of the highlights of the season, particularly in such a dominant way, 34-13," said Head Coach Dale Martini.

"Until Tomorrow"

During the exhausting days of the dreaded two-a-day practices, assistant coach Allen Wertz and sophomore Andrew Smith came up with a rally call that carried through the remainder of the playing season.

The rally call was a result of a comment made practically every day by Coach Allen Wertz. His comment: "It doesn't get much better than this."

Andrew Smith would always add, "Until tomorrow."

"I think it exemplified the attitude the team and coaches had toward each other and the season, commented Head Coach dale Martini.

"Coach Wertz said the motto was to keep us looking forward to practice, but it kept us working hard, also," said Andrew Smith.

Other teammates also thought positively about the rally call.

"The rally call was a good description of how the practices and the season went, which was great. It was just that we couldn't be satisfied because tomorrow would have to be better," said freshman Kurt Wolf

"The rally basically meant that football can be played only once in a lifetime. A lot of us cannot play in college, so high school is our only chance," said senior Tom Levengood.

"The concept began during two-a-days when everyone was sweating, dog-tired, but really getting into the game," Added Coach Allen Wertz.

The rally call was not just something said, but it served as a motto for the gridders. The coaches used the motto to remind the team that they had to work their hardest every day until the season was over. The team responded by putting forth an impressive season finishing 8-2.

Jock Talk

"What influence did the rally call have on the teamwork?"

Josh Deubner- "The rally call encouraged us to practice hard every day and become better as a team."

Larry Poulson- "We began to look forward to another practice more than we ever had before."

Kyle Whitling- "Everyone agreed that the rally made the team work harder during practice."

Gary Howard- "The rally was one more facet that helped us grow as a team. We had spent so much time together on the field that we became friends and not just teammates. You might let your teammates down, but you'll never let your friends down."

Kurt Wolf- "The rally helped us work together and improve as a team. It helped keep us together as a 40 member family.

"What value is teamwork in football and how did it affect the season?"

Dave Lautenschleger- "The teamwork and unity of this team were spectacular. We would each have given our lives for each other, and I think that is very special. There was not one person who carried this team, and when you have 11 guys working for a common goal, the results are usually tremendous."

Jeremy Conklin- "The Indian Valley and Coventry games are good examples of teamwork. In both of these games the whole team worked hard for the win and it paid off in the end."

Tom Levengood- "Teamwork was outstanding. Everyone got along well and enjoyed playing on the same team. No one was selfish and each loved to see other guys make big plays."
