Season Review
*** Information for the 1970 season comes from the TVHS yearbook and newspaper archives

Records for the 1970 season were researched using microfilm of the Daily Reporter from the Tuscarawas County Library. The girls' basketball team was part of the Tri-Valley Conference during the 1970 season. The league consisted of Tusky Valley and six other teams including Garaway, Strasburg, Newcomerstown, Hiland, Conotton Valley, and Dover St. Joseph. Teams were scheduled to play each league team twice for a total of 12 games.

The March 12, 1970 edition of the Times Reporter features a team picture of the "Trojanettes" congratulating them for the Tri-County Conference championship and a perfect record of 12-0. However, the TVHS web team has only been able to find articles confirming scores for ten of the games from that season. The actual score of first Conotton Valley and second Dover St. Joseph's have never been located and we believe these games were never played.

Our belief comes from the the fact that the February 7, 1972 Daily Reporter has an article on Tusky Valley's 28 game winning streak being snapped. If we count backwards from that date we can find all 28 victories including ten during the 1970 season. If Tusky Valley had gone 12-0 during the season as the March 12, 1970 edition states then our winning streak would have been 30 games. The TVHS web team reached out to Conotton Valley to see if perhaps their yearbook contained the information we were looking for. Unfortunately the 1970 Conotton Valley yearbook does not list any scores so we were unable to verify our beliefs. While we will likely never know for 100% certainty we are confident the 1970 Trojanettes ended 10-0.

Unfortunately that is not the only historical issue concerning the 1970 season. We know that Tusky Valley defeated Newcomerstown 36-35 in the second game of the season on January 22, 1970. However, the final score of the game is the only information provided and there is no statistical information for the game in the paper.

To further complicate matters the microfilm of the Daily Reporter's February 5, 1970 edition only contains two pages. While we know that Tusky Valley defeated Dover St. Joseph 25-16 the night before, no statistical information is available for the game.

What we do know for certain is that the main competition for the Trojanettes during the 1970 season came from the Hiland Hawks. The two teams entered their February 9th contest sporting perfect 4-0 records. The host Trojanettes were able to improve to 5-0 as they defeated Hiland 31-23 behind 16 points from senior Tonya Dillon.

One month later the Trojanettes and the Hawks met at Hiland with the Tri-Valley Conference title on the line. Tusky Valley entered the game undefeated while Hiland came in with an 8-1 record. In the biggest game of the year the Trojanettes best player came through as Tonya Dillon scored 26 points to lead Tusky Valley to a 41-38 victory.

While the team ended the season with a perfect 10-0 record they did not have a chance to prove themselves against other schools throughout the state as the Ohio high school girls' basketball state tournament would not begin until the 1975-1976 season.

Senior Tonya Dillon was the team's most valuable player and leading scorer although we can not provide an exact total. We know that Dillon tallied 113 points in the seven games where we have statistical information . We do not have any statistical information for Newcomerstown and Dover St. Joseph games and Dillon is not listed as a scorer in the second victory over Newcomerstown.

The 1970 Trojanettes were once again coached by Miss Paula Martin. The perfect season lifted her career coaching record to a sterling 15-2.
