Season Review
*** Information for the 1973 season comes from the TVHS yearbook and newspaper archives
The 1973 Tusky Valley girls' basketball team added to the tradition of the Trojanette basketball program as they recorded a stellar 9-1 campaign.
The team was led by 3-year letterwinners Bonnie Boyd, Danita Harvey and Gretchen Reed while junior Donna Barnhart emerged as a potent scoring threat in the '73 season. Tusky Valley also had a new head coach for the '73 season as Mary Sweitzer took over the coaching duties.
The Trojanettes began the season in style as they routed Garaway 47-19 behind 26 points from Donna Barnhart. Barnhart came up large again for the Trojanettes as she scored 18 in a 45-42 victory over Strasburg to push the team's record to 2-0.
The third game of the season vs. New Philadelphia is a bit of a mystery. The January 18, 1973 edition of the Daily Reporter carries a small article about the game. From the article we know that Tusky Valley was victorious and that the Trojanettes were led by Danita Harvey's 23 points. Unfortunately the article does not contain the final score of the game. Neither the TVHS or New Philadelphia yearbooks from that year list the score of games so while we know Tusky Valley was victorious we will likely never know the final score.
Harvey and Barnhart continued to lead the Trojanettes in scoring as Tusky Valley won their next three contests over Newcomerstown, Indian Valley South, & Hiland to improve to 6-0.
Up next was a showdown with Stark County's Perry Panthers. Tusky Valley had been the dominant force in Tuscarawas County girls' basketball since the program's inception in 1969 and the game against the Panthers gave the team a chance to prove themselves outside of Tuscarawas County. The Trojanettes took full advantage of the opportunity as Donna Barnhart scored 20 points and Danita Harvey added 18 to lead Tusky Valley to a 51-45 victory over the Panthers.
The Trojanettes routed TCC and Fairless (behind 16 points from Bonnie Boyd) to set up another late season showdown with the Dover Tornadoes.
Tusky Valley had defeated a 9-1 Dover team the year before and both teams once again entered the contest with sterling records. The Trojanettes were 9-0 while the Tornadoes were 8-1. Unfortunately the Trojanettes were unable to repeat their previous year's performance and were denied an undefeated season as Dover pulled off the 30-27 upset.
