Upon ending the '86 campaign, Coach John Hurst predicted if the girls' basketball team worked herd enough, they could be Senate champions in '87. His prophecy was fulfilled. Not only were the girls Senate League champs, they were also Sectional champs by defeating Ridgewood. They finished 19-3 in regular season and 13-1 in the Senate League.
"We were a well oriented team. each girl had a role to play and every girl filled her role well. The depth was there also with five seniors providing the leadership," stated Hurst.
"We achieved a lot more than most non-believers expected and those who were non-believers, became believers. The girls really should feel proud because they brought the community's interest back into the girls' basketball program," he added.
Jayne DiGenova, the team's scoring leader, added, "I feel we played well together because everyone got along. We succeeded because we believed in ourselves. We knew we could do it."
icing on the cake was Hurst's selection as Senate League Coach of the Year. "It feels great to be Coach of the Year, but I could not have done it without the great effort exhibited by the ladies. I really will miss the five seniors, their leadership and togetherness," commented Hurst.
Post-season awards were handed out to Jayne DiGenova for Best Offensive Player,1st Team, Player of the Year Senate League, District 5 First Team, 2nd Team E. District, and H.M All-Ohio; Robin Burkhart for Best Rebounder, First All-Senate, District 5 H.M., E.
